Clairemont Texas

Clairemont was established in 1892 as the Kent County seat. The town thrived with a population up to 300 by the 1950’s. Unfortunately, drastic decline took place in that same decade. Water shortage, lowered cotton prices, and oil companies moving equipment led to the county seat and schools moving to Jayton in 1954. Just a year later the courthouse burned down. Thankfully, the first floor was salvageable and rebuilt as a community center which still stands today. The jail will likely outlive anything else due to its impressive construction. The most recent estimated population was just 15.
