Burkett Texas

Burkett officially became a town in 1886 after originally being a settlement known as Pleasant Valley since the 1870’s. Its peak population was about 200 in the 1940’s and had all the expected businesses, churches, and schools expected of a town at that time.

Coming into Burkett, you will cross a 100 year old bridge over the Pecan Bayou which can comfortably accommodate just a single vehicle at a time. Most roads are partially paved or have loose gravel over dirt and about half the homes appear to be lived in. The high school, which closed in 1957 is mostly gone except one large brick building.
